9th Jun '08 - Monash University 50th Year Celebration at the Asian Civilisation Museum – Forging the Way Ahead for Alumni Connection

9th June 08 marked a significant milestone for Monash University Alumni Association of Singapore (MUAAS) Alumni engagement. More than 250 Alumni members congregated at the University's 50th year celebration held at the Asian Civilisations Museum. For the first time, the MUAAS had not only brought together members from the Singapore Monash Alumni, it also saw a strong Alumni representation from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa and Thailand including 15 other Australian Universities and guests from key industries and institutions. It was a time to meet up old friends and re-connect with the community.

Funded by the Donor, Alumni and Community Relations (DACR) of Monash University, the event was hosted by the new Chancellor, Dr Alan Finkel. The evening kick off with an inspiring welcome address by John Kearsey and video showing the Alumni Distinguish Awards , followed by a speech from President of MUASS, Charles Lee, who recounted how his time at Monash had changed his outlook and prepared him for today's complex and ambiguous globalise marketplace.

Exultantly proud with the achievements of Monash University within the short span of 50 years, Jeffrey Soong, Head of Advancement, Sunway Campus, represented the Monash Alumni Advisory Group (MAAG) members to recite a poem that encapsulated the moment, with the ending stanza as a tribute:

“It’s been fifty years in a fickle,
From Sir Blackwood to Dr Finkel
In between is not just a dash or a flash
But great men and women who shaped Monash”
